In recent times, the birth rate of girls in our State of Maharashtra has dropped considerably. It is very unfortunate that we are facing this problem in a State like Maharashtra which is supposed to be one of the most progressive States in our country. Particularly the population of girls in the age group of 0 to 6 year has reduced significantly. If we compare the 2001 to 2011 census, it shows that in 2001, the ratio of boys to girls was 1000 : 913. Whereas, the current 2011 census shows the ratio at 1000 : 883. This is a serious concern and will lead to a problem for the society in the long run.

As you may be aware since the last decade, Yashwantrao Chavan Pratishthan, Mumbai is engaged in various public awareness campaigns on this issue at various schools and colleges all over the state. To further take this issue to the masses, and to highlight the importance of gender equality, a padyatra has been organized from 25th to 28th August, 2011.

The padyatra will start from Naigaon (Mrs. Savitribai Phule’s birthplace) Taluka Khandala Dist. Satara to Pune (Mahatma Phule Wada). In the padyatra “Jagar Ha Janivancha, Tumchya Mazya Lekincha”, around 500 girls from all over the state will participate with me. We are also planning a five year public awareness programme in Maharashtra from August 2011 to August 2016 for the same.

At the closing ceremony of this padyatra on 28th August, 2011, a “Yuvati Parishad” has been organized at 2.00 pm at Ganesh Kala Krida Kendra (Swargate) Pune. This parishad will be attended by around 4000 girls. Dignitaries from various fields will also attend this conference.
